Someone did that to me once. I also heard of it happening to someone else but his opponent actually ran out of time rather than checkmating.
If it's after the other player has continued an oviously hopeless game instead of resigning, then I can understand their motive.
If it's in a complex position in the middle game... what can you say - for some people it's not just chess, there's a lot more going on.

yes it gives time to resign...but i mean...lot of time people just don't see checkmate...so i don't resign i just wait i go chekmated...i think there is something sadistic in that :D

This doesn't happen to me. I guess mostly low rated players would waste their time in such a way.
